FAQ

Here are some answers to questions that we often hear. If you have any more questions, feel free to fill out the form below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What is foxhunting ?

Foxhunting, the chase of a fox or coyote by horsemen with a pack of hounds. In England, the home of the sport, foxhunting dates from at least the 15th century.

A day’s hunting begins with a meet, at which the followers join the hounds, acknowledge the master, and are frequently offered hospitality by one of their number who acts as host for the occasion. On the command of the master, hounds move off to draw (search) the covert, which may be a woodland, a patch of gorse, or a field in which it is suspected that a fox may be hiding.

Do I need to participate in all the meets ?

No. We go out twice a week. You can take part in any number of meets. We also offer different types of membership that can suite your needs. Or you can join us once in a while simply by paying a capping fee.

Is there other activities than hunting ?

We don’t just hunt. After every hunt we gather for a traditionnal ”breakfast” where we can discuss the good times we had out there. We also take all the opportunities we get to get together and enjoy the company of each other : Christmas Luncheon, Hunt Ball, Farmers Party, Hunter Pace, Hunter Trials, etc.

You can become a social member and just join us in our gatherings if you are not riding but would like to be a member of our club.

When is hunting season ?

Our official hunt season starts at the beginning of September and runs through the end of November or beginning of December, depending on weather conditions as we don’t want to put riders and animals at risk.

We have a period in August called ”cubbing” where we go out to train the hounds before the season.

Do I need to own a horse ?

You can bring your own horse or you can rent one with our partner stable (Forever Green Stables).

Can I just come and try it once to see if I like it ?

Of course you can. Just get in contact with us and we’ll make sure you have a good time.

Is there an age limit ?

We accept rider of all ages. Our current riders age from 10 to 84 years old.

Do I have to be an experienced rider to hunt ?

You need some experience but don’t have to be an advanced rider as we can divide the riders in ”fields” depending on the level of the challenge you want. You can challenge yourself to do more canter and jump the obstacles that are in the way, or if you prefer, you can keep it at a walk-trot to simply enjoy the outing. Our field master will always ensure a pace where everyone feels safe and comfortable.

You can also take some riding lessons with our partner stable (Forever Green Stables) to get the basics of mounting a horse and feel comfortable enough to come out with us.

Do we kill the animals when we go out to hunt ?

We are a ”NO KILL” hunt. Wich means that we don’t go out to kill the animals. Traditionnaly, the sport involved the catching of the prey, but with the realities of today’s world, we believe that if we kill our prey, we won’t be able to assure a longevity of this tradition.

Where do you hunt ?

We have a great relationship with our neighbouring farmers that allow us to use their fields and wooded area to practice our sport. Most of the time we meet at our kennels in Glen Robertson, ON, but we are also hosted by our members who have access to territories suitable for a hunt. We also have to chance to make joint meets with our neighbouring hunt clubs (Montreal, Ottawa, etc) where they invite us to go hunt with them on their territory.
